Aquarium of Banyuls-sur, situated at the Observatory Océano, Laboratoire Arago, Banyuls-sur-Mer, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
Located in a unique setting, facing the sea and a few dozen meters from the Marine Reserve of Banyuls-Cerbère, the Aquarium of Banyuls-sur-Mer is an integral part of the Observatory Océanologique which it is a showcase for the general public since 1885. The original Aquarium, which focuses on the presentation of the fauna and the local marine flora, is the oldest structure of its kind on the Mediterranean coast of France.
A touch pool allows, in the presence of a facilitator, to truly enter into contact with agencies fascinating and often misunderstood that populate the coast. Guided tours are also arranged by appointment each week.
Over 200 species of plants, marine invertebrates and fish, all originating from the Pyrenees-Orientales, of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, are presented in four basins organized following a visit to illustrate the successive habitats found on the coast. You will discover the amazing complexity but also very fragile and the ecological role of certain habitats such as coastal lagoons, sea grasses. Different Aquariums, richly populated and illustrated many informative panels will help you discover the diversity of life and often amazing adaptations that marine animals can develop to ensure their survival.
