Alexandria is ancient. Once the most famous city in the world, Alexandria is still an popular destination with holidaymakers eager to enjoy the 20 mile stretch of Mediterranean coastline and the location of some of the wonders of the ancient world.
Alexandria is situated in the north of Egypt and the Mediterranean coast of Africa. This location has meant that Alexandria has always been an important trading post conventiently situated at the connection between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
Once a small fishing town and haunt of pirates, Alexandria saw a change of fortunes with the arrival of Alexander the Great in 334BC. It went on to become the capital city of Egypt for nearly 1,000 years, one of the most modern and trend setting cities of the era. Alexandria was the legendary location of the Library of Alexandria, the most famous library of the ancient world that made this a centre of learning attracting scholars from every country. Sadly most of the ancient wonders of Alexandria have not survived into the modern era, destroyed by earthquakes and making way for the building of the modern city.
