Tel Aviv enjoys UNESCO World Heritage Status for its Bauhaus architecture.

The influx of refugees from Nazi Germany in the 1930s put pressure on the city to build more housing. And the architects who arrived from Europe were schooled in the Bauhaus, an architectural school established by Walter Gropius in 1919.

The Bauhaus style revolutionised architecture. Its principles were thoroughly modern – to achieve harmony between function and the artistic and technical means of manufacture. In the modern world, architecture should meet the needs of society.

They produced buildings that were aesthetically pleasing yet technically sound. The emphasis was on simple, functional lines and no unnecessary decorations.

Tel Aviv grew into an urban landscape of ultramodern white concrete architectural wonders. It became known as the White City. To this day, there are over 4,000 Bauhaus buildings still spread around Tel Aviv.
