Beach Soccer is a craze started on the beaches of Rio de Janiero, Brazil, which has taken the world by storm.
Beach Soccer is played on a smaller pitch than a regular football pitch, and is marked out in the beach sand. Teams consist of 3 to 5 players who play barefoot. The pace of the game is much faster than regular football so spectators love the game as much as the players.
Serious beach soccer tournaments have been held in Brazil for years. Copacabana Beach has hosted the Beach Soccer World Cup for many years. The tournament was taken under the wing of FIFA who decided to move the location to a new beach every year. 2008 saw the Beach Soccer World Cup move to Marseilles, France.
The 2009 World Cup will be held in Dubai. This is a special year as it celebrates 15 years of the Beach Soccer World Cup and the growing popularity of Beach Soccer.
