Brazil is the largest producer of coffee while the United States is by far the largest consumer of coffee, consuming about one fifth of all coffee produced. Coffee in the US is a $34 billion industry. It is here that coffee culture has reached a whole new level, and this coffee culture is now catching on in countries the world over.
According to legend, coffee has been favoured as a pick-me-up in East Africa since the day in about 850AD when Khalid the goatherd noticed that, despite the midday sun his goats were alert and frisky after chewing on some red berries growing in the region.
The rest is history! Coffee became a favoured brew for staying alert during religious ceremonies - the whirling dervishes were fuelled by caffeine during their impressive whirling marathons. The brew soon made its way to Arabia where coffee houses became popular for the first time.
Coffee Shops are still popular meeting places to this day, the cornerstone of Coffee Culture that has taken the world by storm. Word has it that even the state of the global economy has not affected the popularity of coffee.
