Cupid is a playful deity who loved to spread love. His famed arrows would arouse desire in the person they hit, allowing them to fall in love with the first person they saw.
Cupid comes from the latin "cupido" which means desire. Cupid was the son of Mars, the god of war, and Venus, the goddess of love. Cupid is depicted with a bow and quiver of arrows.
The story goes that Cupid's mother Venus was jealous of the beautiful mortal named Psyche. She asked Cupid to shoot Psyche with one of his arrows while she slept, so that she would fall in love with a grotesque creature when she awoke.
The plan backfired when Cupid made himself invisible and crept in on the sleeping maiden. She awoke and looked him straight in the eyes. Cupid got such a fright he ended up scratching himself with his own arrow. He ended up falling deeply in love with Psyche.
Venus was furious and put a curse on Psyche but had to relent when Cupid refused to shoot any more of his love arrows and the world became a miserable place. Jupiter helped the lovers by making Psyche immortal so that she and cupid could be together. Psyche became goddess of the soul.
Love continues to conquer the world and in the month of February, we celebrate the playful work of cupid.
