Mexico State of Baja California is a land of quiet beauty and stark contrast, where cactus strewn desert coast meets the intense blue waters of the Sea of Cortez.
Ensenada, our next featured destination, lies just 120 kilometres south of the border with the United States. It is a popular holiday destination for Americans looking for a taste of Mexico close to home.
Ensenada is an important commercial and fishing port but great beaches, celebrated surf spots, good restaurants and whale watching opportunities lie close by – the grey whale migrates from Alaska to the safety of the lagoons of Baja.
Legend has it that the city of Ensenada was built around a bar (... though this may be a bit of exaggeration!) :Hussong’s was originally a stagecoach stop built by German, Johan Hussong. Hussong's soon became known as a drinking hole - Established in 1892, Hussongs Cantina is the oldest bar in the Californias and is now a family empire. Rumour has it that the Margarita was invented here.
