Galway is an ancient Irish town continuously inhabited since the Stone Age.
It started life as a fishing hamlet, saw countless invasions over the centuries and enjoyed wealth and prosperity in the 16th Century.
At this time Galway harbour was a centre for exporting local fish, wool and leather and Galway’s 14 main families became incredibly wealthy in the process.
Lynch’s Castle is the oldest medieval townhouse in Ireland built by one of the wealthy families in 1490. It now houses a bank and sadly only the outer shell of the original building is intact.
Galway is a vibrant, bohemian town on Ireland’s west coast. Washed by the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean the area offers a host of sights and activities for the holidaymaker.
The Galway of today still maintains its olde world charm despite the fact that it is the second city in the Republic of Ireland and the unofficial cultural capital of Ireland. It has one of the youngest populations in Europe, so the streets are always bustling with life and colour.
Galway boasts a huge number of restaurants and a social calendar full of festivals throughout the year.
