Guarana, a Fruit of Brazil and favourite energy tonic

Guarana is one of the most exceptional fruits from Brazil, revered for centuries by the local tribes for its magical and medicinal qualities.

The edible part of the guarana fruit is the black seed which lies within the white flesh. Ingesting the seeds gives one high energy levels ... the tribes attributed this to supernatural powers, but  we now know it is the effect of caffeine.

To the indigenous Indians, the guarana seeds were not only a stimulant, but an aphrodisiac and a means to prolong life.

They roasted and ground the seeds, mixed them with manioc meal, and rolled the paste into sticks. Small pieces could then be grated off and brewed to make a drink. Guaraná has now becomes popular worldwide, and is used as a main ingredient in many energy drinks.
