Youve probably listened to the famous song from Bossa Nova: Girl from Ipanema. This is a celebration of the neighbourhood location of one of the worlds hottest beaches ... Ipanema.
The Ipanema neighbourhood lies in the southern region of Rio de Janiero, guarded by 2 mountains, Dois Irmaos (the Two Brothers). At the western end of the beach. This is a sophisticated part of Rio de Janiero and its most beautiful beach … attracting beautiful sun worshippers from all over the world. This is prime people watching terrain!
Ipanema beach offers all the distractions for the beach goer: beach sports from volley ball to body boarding. Beer and the national drink of Brazil, the caipirinha, is widely available. On Sundays, visit the Hippie Market in Ipanema and stock up with food, art and knick knacks. The area around Rua Farme de Amoedo is well-known for being a gay-friendly.
The word Ipanema means bad water in the old Tupi language. This refers to the waves which break too close to the beach making it unfavourable for fishing. Still the beach break regularly forms barrels and is popular for surfing. Areopador beach to the west is famous for its waves and surf schools. Click here to check out a surf report.
Ipanema is the trendy part of Rio de Janiero. It is one of the more exclusive residential areas and is bustling with trendy eateries, sophisticated shopping and culture too: from art galleries and avant-garde theatres to bookshops with a cafe flavour. After a hard day on the beach, you can take in the vibrant nightlife too.
During the Rio Carnival, the streets come alive. Ipanema hosts its own street parade during the festivities.
