Tel Aviv lies alongside the ancient city of Jaffa, which has functioned as a port since the Bronze Age.
Tel Aviv is Israel’s thoroughly modern Mediterranean beach city. The strip of beach is only a few blocks from anywhere in the city centre. Renewed in the 1980s, this is now among the cleanest and most easily accessible urban beaches in the world.
The new city was established in the 1880s by a massive influx of Jewish immigrants who could not afford to live in nearby Jaffa, which was an expensive neighbourhood. These days Jaffa houses a population of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The neighbourhoods are being revived, inhabited mostly by artists drawn to the exciting combination of ancient, new and restored architecture. A stroll around restored Old Jaffa is a must for visitors and Israelis alike.
