The Jumeirah Garden City Project is a Dh350 billion development that plans to create a city within Dubai City.
The 12 year plan includes a transportation network to link new business, residential, retail and leisure spaces: an ambitious master-planned community created from scratch.
Residents of the low-income housing areas of Al Wasl and Satwa were served eviction notices at the beginning of last year. These areas will be demolished to make way for the new super community that is planned for a population of around 60,000 residents. Buildings will encircle a string of parks including Dubai Park, set to take on the ethos of great city spaces like Central Park in New York and Hyde Park in London.
However, there have been rumours in recent weeks that the ambitious building plans of Dubai are being affected by the global economic slowdown. Various reports suggest that the Jumeirah Garden City Project may be put on hold. Amid reports of job losses and plunging rentals across the city, there have been rumours that residents previously evicted have been allowed to return to their houses.
