The Netherlands bulb district lies between Haarlem and Leiden which means that the countryside comes alive in the springtime.

The extensive bulb fields are spectacular, starting in March with the blooming of crocuses, daffodils and narcissi, followed by hyacinths and tulips in April until early May. In late summer it is the turn of the gladioli and dahlias.

It takes about an hour to cycle through this spectacular countryside from Leiden - to reach the holiday town of Noordwijk aan Zee. It lies on the North Sea coast with its scenic beaches and sand dunes.

Noordwijk aan Zee began as a fishing village around 1200. Fishermen prospered after the 1300’s when Willem Breukelszoon van Biervliet made history by discovering a special technique of gutting herring, a process which facilitates the curing process of herring (the oldest street food in the Netherlands).
