Thailand is a favourite holiday spot ... and Phuket is Thailand’s most famous picture postcard holiday destination.
A veritable beach paradise, Phuket is an island province lying in the azure Andaman Sea off the west coast of Thailand's southern provinces.Deep blue skies are mirrored in the crystal clear ocean below.
The tranquil bays on the west coast are fringed by some Thailand's best long white powdery beaches ... take off your shoes, find a hammock, and relax!
Phuket offers deliciously warm water, excellent snorkelling and scuba diving off Koh Similan, ideal windsurfing conditions, a host of holiday resorts and some of the best seafood in Thailand.
Most of the island is covered by thick forest, so after a hard day on the beach get up into the hills and enjoy the view of the many surrounding islands and islets. A popular sunset spot is Laem Promthep (Brahma's Cape) near the southernmost point.
Throughout 2005 life slowly returned to normal for the people of Phuket following the devastating tsunami that struck Asia on 26 December 2004. 250 people, including foreign tourists, lost their lives in Phuket alone and the beaches on the west coast, especially Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata, sustained major damage.
These days the economy is back on track with little obvious tsunami damage evident other than at more remote beaches.
