The Aquarium du Lac du Bourget in Aix-les-Bains is run by the French Ministry of the Environment. Primarily designed to teach the public about the protection and management of a natural aquatic environment.
Showcasing the largest freshwater Aquarium in France with 42 species of fishes on show, of which 33 live in the lake : perch, pike, trout, eel, bream, tench, carp, bleak, mirandelle, catfish, pike-perch, roach and two very rare salmonidae - the powan and pollan (also called freshwater herring) and the char (also called lake trout) which lives on the gravel bottom 60 metres down.
When in Aix-les-Bains a visit to Aquarium du Lac du Bourget should be high on the agenda.
