Welcome to the Astro Cafe, Lake Tekapo, New Zealand. Shelter from the wind and share a meal, or just a hot or cold drink, while enjoying the ethereal view all around the Mackenzie Basin.

We offer Day Tours of the Observatory departing with a knowledgeable guide, on request from the Astro Cafe. On a clear day you can watch our turbulent star, the sun, through our special solar telescope.

If lunch is on your mind we can prepare a jumbo ham sandwich for you, with fresh Mackenzie High Country bread, sun-dried tomato, and gourmet mustards. If you prefer a sweet, we have something for every taste. Our coffees and hot chocolate are famous in the region and our iced-chocolate is now available to sooth the heat of summer.

Plan a self-catered twilight event by candlelight and watch the sun set over the Ben Ohau Range, casting its golden glow on glacial lakes, tussock grasslands and snow-capped peaks. By prior arrangement only.

We are weather-proof under our glass roof and snug behind glass walls with views on all sides, and doors and windows that can be opened to the fresh, clean Mackenzie air and the outdoor surrounds.
