Herbert Powell started in the grocery business in 1948 with a retail store. He relocated to the Town of Bay Roberts, Canada in 1955 with Conception Bay’s first supermarket—Powell’s.

In 1990 and 1991, the Powell Group acquired two smaller wholesalers and relocated to a warehouse facility. This turning point was the beginning of Atlantic Grocery Distributors Ltd. (AGD). Merging three companies brought together over 100 years of combined retail and wholesale experience. Atlantic Grocery had grown into a grocery and Food service distributor for all of Newfoundland.
