Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad Preservation Society, Inc.
The mission of the Society is to preserve and operate the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad and provide educational materials about Maineâ??s rail history.
* The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad
B&MLRR is a 33-mile railroad line in Waldo County, Maine. Built in 1867 and one of the oldest continuously-operating railroads in the United States, B&MLRR is believed to be the best preserved rural branch line railroad in the northeast United States.
* Operations
The Preservation Society owns the historic steam and diesel locomotives and other rolling stock formerly used by the B&MLRR. Using this equipment, the Society will operate scenic excursion passenger trains over the State of Maine-owned main line of the railroad from the historic depot in Unity, Maine.
* Education and the Museum
Preservation Society will also provide educational materials about Maineâ??s railroad history. A museum is being developed at the Unity Depot starting with the B&MLRRâ??s existing collection of historic rolling stock and artifacts. Donations and purchases will expand the collection.
