The year 1868 - Even before the turn of the century, horse races were a popular spectator sports among the high society of the German Imperial capital. The horse race track at Hoppegarten, located in the East just outside Berlin, was a playground for the rich and beautiful of the aspiring new capital. The first horse races were staged here as early as 1868, with the “Union-Klub” being the driving force behind this track. But when German Chancellor von Bismarck initiated the construction of an elegant suburb in the new Berlin West, at the end of the luxurious boulevard Kurfürstendamm, the interest in Hoppegarten waned. In 1899, this new suburb, called Grunewald, was approved as an independent rural community.
The Berlin Olympic Stadium was constructed for the Olympic Summer Games of 1936 under the general architectural direction of architect Werner March. In the course of history, The Berlin Olympic Stadium has seen several renovation and modernisation projects. Starting in August 2000, the Olympic stadium undergone its last comprehensive reconstruction, guided by the strict rules of the monument conservation order and the increasingly refined requirements of international sports associations.
