Big Tancook Elementary School on Big Tancook Island, Nova Scotia, Canada was built around 1950 and is a facility for grades primary to five, and is one of the last School rooms in Canada with an average population of 10. Big Tancook Island is the largest of 365 islands in Mahone Bay, Lunenburg County with a history spanning back to the 1700's and fishing is now the primary industry, at one time most islanders were farmers, and the making of sauerkraut was a primary industry till the 1970's with some islanders still keeping this tradition alive, and it can be found in some Lunenburg retails outlets for purchase. Boat building was also a booming business with the first boat built around 1827 by John Baker, and Tancook in later years became famous for the construction of the Tancook Whalers and Schooners, noted for their speed, seaworthiness, and fine lines, this however has become a thing of the past. Big Tancook Elementary School covers a wonderful history of the island, has one teacher who is also the principal and showcases student works.
