The Cliffside Beach Club, originally named Conradâ??s Beach, opened in 1904. The â??beach businessâ? saw its heyday in the 1920â??s; on warm sunny days the pavilion was filled with members elegantly dressed in silk suits and felt hats. In those early years, it was unthinkable to arrive at the beach in a bathing suit; over four hundred wooden changing rooms were used three times a day to accommodate the crowds.
In response to the changing times, and with strong support from summer residents, Cliffside became a private club in 1949. The Beach Club emphasized personal service. Members had the same locker year after year, as well as the same umbrella spot on the beach with the same color umbrella. New members waited years to earn the coveted front row spots. The beach club was bought by the Currie family in 1959. Hotel rooms and suites were added in the 1980s and 1990s along with the clubâ??s iconic blue, yellow and green umbrellas along the beachfront.
In the late 1990â??s, the clubâ??s modest workout room was transformed into a world-class, state-of-the-art exercise facility, including weight and cardio machines, a stretching area, his and hers steam room, an indoor hydrotherapy spa, and a climate controlled massage room. The response to the facility has been tremendous. Last winter, more state-of-the-art cardio machines and equipment were added.
The club is now entering another exciting time. The addition of a lap pool, an outdoor hydrotherapy spa, a leisure pool, and a members and resort guests only bar/café, will only enhance the experience of staying at the Cliffside Beach Club. With its breathtaking views of Nantucket Sound and the continued addition of amenities and services, Cliffside offers an intimate resort experience unparalleled by any other.
