Tucked away in a narrow side street off the busy Avenida Rio Branco, you'll find a stunning ornate tearoom. Except for the stained-glass window that was added in a 1920s renovation, the room hasn't changed much since this elegant Restaurant opened in 1894. The spacious room is divided into three sections. Two large deli counters flanking either side of the entrance serve up sweets and savory snacks with coffee or other refreshments for those who can't be bothered to sit down. The remainder of the ground floor is taken up by the elegant tearoom, where a variety of teas, sandwiches, salads, and sweets are served on fine china underneath a '20s stained-glass window. The upstairs room is reserved for full lunches -- on Saturdays the feijoada (black beans and pork stew) alone is worth a trip downtown.
