Welcome to Cruise Tekapo, Lake Tekapo, New Zealand. Filling a glaciated valley dammed and contained by moraine dating back 20,000 years, Lake Tekapo is still fed today from the remnants of ice age glaciers descending from the South Island’s Southern Alps. The delicate turquoise colour, which never ceases to amaze visitors, is derived from pulverized rock ground by the glaciers into a fine ‘rock flour’ which is held in suspension in the waters of the lake.
Lake Tekapo is the start of a massive hydro scheme which carries the waters through an extensive system of upland canals and lakes generating electricity many times over on its journey to the Pacific Ocean hundreds of kilometres away.
