For 40 years, the Dan Carmel Hotel has reigned as Haifa's most important and luxurious Hotel. The lobby is a wonderful example of 1950s modernistic architecture and decor -- a style just now reaching the age to be appreciated for nostalgic as well as interesting esthetic value. There are spacious public areas overlooking beautiful gardens, marvelous vistas from virtually all guest rooms, and a large country club-style outdoor swimming pool that gets temptingly warm in late summer. Standards of service are unusually good: The staff is one of the most helpful in Israel; for guests who stay in suites or Executive Bay View rooms, there's a Red Carpet Welcome program that includes free transfer from Ben Gurion Airport to the Hotel.
The rooftop business lounge is especially beautiful, with a fireplace, dazzling views from its terrace, and a running light buffet; the in-house Rondo Restaurant is the most elegant kosher choice in Haifa, but at press time is operating on a limited schedule, and is open only at night. Deluxe rooms and suites were renovated in the 1990s and are spacious and comfortable. At press time, some superior (standard) rooms have not yet been refurbished and show their age, but more renovations are scheduled. Deluxe and Superior rooms are divided in price between rooms with interesting views of the city and rooms with spectacular views. The warm, shallow children's pool is a draw for toddlers; and there's a very good kids' activities program (in Hebrew, but easy for an English-speaking child to join) for children of all ages that is run by an energetic, inventive staff.
