The legendary ?Don the Beachcomber?, Donn Beach, originated the concept of Tiki restaurants and bars. Inspired by his travels to the Caribbean and South Pacific Beach opened the first of many South Seas inspired establishments in 1933 around the end of prohibition.

His restaurants captivated the public from their décor of Tiki torches, rattan furniture, flower leis and bright-colored fabrics to the tropical Asian cuisine and exotic rum punches he served. He is claimed to have created more than ninety potent rum concoctions including the Mai Tai, a rum and fruit-juice cocktail still popular today. Other trendy drinks he invented include favorites such as the ?Zombie?, ?Planters Punch?, ?Kona Grog? and many more.
