Welcome to the Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence, Kansas in the United States. The Free State Brewing Company opened in 1989 as the first legal Brewery in Kansas in over 100 years. Located in a renovated inter-urban trolly station in historic downtown Lawrence, Kansas, the Brewery was an early participant in the rejuvenation of the north end of the downtown business district. Led by the renovation and refurbishment of neighboring Liberty Hall and the Eldridge Hotel, the result has been a rebirth of the 600 block of Massachusetts St.
Free State Brewing Company proud of the history of brewing in Kansas, and we have done our very best to re-establish the tradition of fine hand crafted beers, produced close to home. Our 14 Barrel brewhouse is made up of some of the best equipment available to the small brewer, but we still think that the best ingredient is the care and respect that we have for each and every beer that we make. Of course our commitment to quality doesn't stop with the brewhouse, but is equally important to our dedicated and creative kitchen staff. They bring you an excellent and varied menu as well as delicious daily specials.
As technological innovations and people's needs change, so do the manufacturing and marketing of goods. Gone are the harness makers and coopers. Improved products made their services obsolete. Modern society no longer needs cigar makers and chandlers. Mass production made their talents too costly. In Kansas, a law, not technology nor shifting consumer needs, ended an industry. The law was state prohibition of 1881; the industry: beer manufacturing.
