Welcome to Gordon Hulme, Sidney, Canada. In 1912, Samuel Roberts, the son of one of the Peninsula’s founding families, opened a Real Estate and Insurance Agency on the north side of Beacon Avenue. Sam, and later his wife Millie, saw great potential in the little farming community north of Victoria, and were proud to be a part of the Saanich Peninsula’s beginnings.
By 1955, Sidney and area were a real growing concern which attracted Gordon Hulme and his family to relocate from Campbell River and purchase the business, changing it’s name to Gordon Hulme Ltd. Gordon took great interest in the future of Sidney and was a member of the Rotary Club and served as President of the Chamber of Commerce. The office was instrumental in much of the growth in the area, including subdivisions such as Eden Place – which Gordon named to reflect his opinion of the charming seaside town.
After her husband passed away in 1966, Marion Hulme took over the real estate and insurance Agency. She continued her husband’s philosophy of honest, hard work and commitment to the community. Abiding by the ‘golden rule’, Marion made sure all her employees were professional, educated in their field, and local residents. Each individual became a part of the ‘family’.
Ready to retire in 1987, Marion then sold the business to two long time employees, Holly Critchison and Frances O'Connor. In order to facilitate better growth in the insurance agency, the girls temporarily turned the management of the real estate agency over to a national franchise. During this time the office was renovated and then, with a fresh enthusiasm and a new partner in Tom Fisher, their long time managing broker, they re-opened the real estate agency under the banner of Gordon Hulme Realty Ltd on April 1, 1995, sporting new signs and a new look. Foregoing the national image, the business has returned to it’s independent grass roots in the community.
