When The Headlands Coffeehouse opened in the spring of 1995, it was the aim of owner-operators Pete, Mary and Dave Gealey to provide an upbeat, comfortable headquarters for yummy light fare and high grade jazz. And from its first day, The Headlands Coffeehouse has successfully maintained this standard. It's the kind of place that glowed in the collective unconscious long before it opened; indeed, it became an instant community center.
The secret of The Headlands is the overwhelming generosity and unfailing friendliness of the Gealeys, manifested in every aspect of the cafe. The food and drink are economical, fresh, delicious. The cordial, democratic climate welcomes everybody, local business people, tourists, teens, little kids, seniors, artists and writers and musicians, and all the extraordinary "ordinary people" who live on the Mendocino Coast. The patrons generate a vibrant bustle, yet the pace is relaxed and unhurried. If you take a couple hours to drink your cup of coffee, nobody will even notice. And the thoughtful, mellow ambiance is enhanced by a sound system playing always, always, straight-ahead bebop.
