Situated in spacious premises at the Hemel-en-Aarde Village, Jenny and Hennie van der Bijl operate three integral businesses under one roof. First and foremost, there is a large, well stocked farmstall offering an impressive array of top quality products. It is hard to ignore the tempting display of bread, cakes, biscuits, or the mouth-watering deli counter which would satisfy any aspiring gourmet. Local farmers supply a wide variety of the freshest fruit and vegetables and there is an excellent range of preserves.
After stocking up at the farmstall wander through to the Meadows Coffee Shop which offers toasted and open sandwiches, cakes, pastries and crisp salads. There is also a wholesome selection of pancakes which are excellent value for money, as the fillings are substantial and each is served with a large side salad. On cold winter mornings enjoy the warmth of the Welcome Dover stove, or depending on your preference, stroll through to the other room which has a cosy open fire and is attractively decorated with a sea theme.
In the evenings, the table settings are more formal with burgundy and blue napery, artistically arranged serviettes and candlelight. The Incredible Fish Restaurant offers a set menu where each table of diners enjoy a whole char-grilled linefish usually yellowtail, geelbek or cob, and as portions are very generous (500g per person), there is invariably some left to take home. Included in the set menu is a welcome glass of sherry served with dips, then followed by a whole tureen of piping hot soup. The char-grilled fish, which is expertly prepared by Hennie, is accompanied by seasonal vegetables and salad. For those with a sweet tooth, round off a superb meal with a perfect pavlova. The Sunday lunch buffet is highly recommended and offers a variety of interesting dishes including the popular Fish Canneloni and Fish Roulade, and the famous curried Black Mussel Salad. Be sure to book early and avoid disappointment.
