The Island Seafood Grill and Bar, Humewood, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa
The Island is aptly named as there is a distinct "Bali feel" to this unusual restaurant. Designed to resemble an island shack with wooden beams, hessian-covered ceiling and bamboo blinds, it is elevated from the surrounding fynbos and dense vegetation to afford beach and sea views.
The spacious L-shaped restaurant has a fireplace for cold winter evenings, and there is space for a dance floor, which makes The Island Seafood Grill & Bar makes an ideal venue for Functions in Humewood, and catering can be either a set menu or buffet style depending on the occasion.
There is a separate Bar area which leads out to the sun-drenched deck with ocean views over Port Elizabeths' beach front, and the owners are busy with an exciting development which consists of a second deck, walkway and water feature to further enhance the appeal of this popular venue.
During the summer months the deck is packed to capacity with patrons enjoying lunch from the deck menu, and later in the day relaxing with cocktails and sundowners. Besides the usual Margaritas and Long Island Iced Tea, the Bar offers more adventurous combinations such as Maitai - a heady concoction of rum, Amaretto, Triple Sec, Southern Comfort, plus orange and pineapple juice.
The Island is first and foremost a Seafood restaurant and is particularly well-known for their excellent Prawns and Calamari, and of course Crayfish is extremely popular when in season and fresh Oysters are usually available too. There are several appetising Game dishes on the menu including fusion-style stuffed Quails served with a delectable apple and fig sauce. The Island-style theme extends to the menu with all dishes having exotic names. For a deliciously different salad try the Carloforte - a Mediterranean salad with liqueur-soaked prunes, Camembert, and orange segments, and for those who enjoy a warm starter we recommend Haitien - baby Calamari stuffed with savoury rice, feta and nuts and grilled to perfection. For those who prefer dining Al Fresco the deck menu offers a selection of very reasonably priced dishes including the very popular Bali-style chicken saté and chips served with chilli peanut sauce.
