Ivanhoe Sea Safaris, Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa
We specialise in personalised Boat-Based Whale Watching Safaris into Area 6 of Walker Bay. Walker Bay, with the towns of Hermanus on its northern shore and Gansbaai on the southern, is renowned for the best viewing of Southern Right Whales in the world. Ivanhoe Sea Safaris operate out of the fishing harbour of Gansbaai some 35 minutes from Hermanus, and a scenic two-hour drive from Cape Town along the Western Cape Overberg Route.
Our operation is upmarket with our guests being attended to by experienced, fully-qualified and registered specialist Whale guides. On each trip we drink a toast to "Our Whales" in iced fruit juice.
Our whale-watching vessel, "Ivanhoe", is the queen of the South African whale-watching fleet. Commissioned in October 2004, she was designed specifically for watching whales by Rudy, the most experienced whale skipper in South Africa.
While capable of carrying forty, we limit "Ivanhoe" to thirty guests, enabling all to be seated. She has been designed as a dry boat; no one gets wet, so the wearing of rain suits or foul weather gear is not necessary.
"Ivanhoe" is a catamaran - over 42 ft in length and powered by two 225 hp, pollution-free Yamaha engines, which are renowned for their quietness and reliability. Catamaran stability, a high-up whale viewing deck and a lower deck with all-round viewing plus large, dry cabins and a toilet are just some of the features of this luxuriously comfortable custom-built vessel.
