From our roots in children's music beginning in Tacoma, Washington, to our lovely regionally known children's book, music and lots more store, this is how Linden Tree Children's Records and Books in Los Altos, California in the United States, evolved.
Linden Tree Children's Records and Books had its beginnings in 1981 as Linden International, Children's Record Specialists. Owners Linda and Dennis Ronberg combined our names to create the name of our new business, Linden International, with the goal of providing quality children's recordings to parents and teachers. As many of the recordings were by Canadian children's singers, we chose to include "International" in the name of our business.
We worked from our home in Tacoma, WA and did parent education presentations for nursery school parents about the importance of music in children's lives. We put together a small catalogue of childrens recordings, and people could come to our home in Tacoma to listen to and purchase records and cassettes for their children.
We were the first to bring Canadian children's recording artists Raffi and Sharon, Lois & Bram to perform concerts in Seattle and Tacoma.
In 1983, it was time to think about opening a store. We moved with our two daughters to the San Francisco Bay Area and worked for another year from home, bringing Raffi for his first Nothern California concerts. We also sponsored Bay Area concerts with Sharon, Lois & Bram, Fred Penner, Eric Nagler and others.
In the Spring of 1984, Linden International became Linden Tree Children's Records and Books and opened as a small store on 1st Street in Los Altos, California. Since 1989, Linden Tree Children's Records and Books has been in our current location at 170 State Street in Los Altos, Caliofornia.
We continue to offer an excellent selection of children's recordings, but we also have an extremely broad inventory of books, as well as a wonderful selection of other "treasures", puppets and book-related dolls, tea sets, science and math games, toys, art materials, origami paper, water toys, paper dolls, infant and toddler toys, puzzles and gifts. As parents, we tried to find items that we had had difficulty finding for our children. We also wanted toy ideas for trips, restaurants, and waiting in doctor's offices.
Because of our interest in other countries, (Dennis studied in Japan, and Linda studied in Germany and was in the Peace Corps in Brazil) we have always carried a selection of toys and gifts from other countries.
We continue to connect with our roots by co-sponsoring, with Music for Minors, concerts with Charlotte Diamond and Tom Chapin, and by our summer concert program of Wednesdays in the Courtyard.
What makes us special? Linden Tree Children's Records and Books is fortunate to have a diverse and knowledgeable staff. Ranging in age from teens to sixties, our staff includes students, teachers, librarians, storytellers and children's literature experts and enthusiasts.
We delight in helping customers choose just the right book or gift, and our common goal is to help children find the joy of reading. We hope to encourage children to be life-long readers. It makes our day complete when we know we have put the right book in the hands of a child.
Because of our history with and commitment to quality children's music, we are also delighted to help customers find just the right recording for whatever their needs are. We have a listening area in the store so that you may preview recordings before purchasing. And because we listen to the recordings daily, we are well equipped to help you find what you want.
