Lucy's on a Plate was born in 1989 through a love of food and people, and has gradually grown into all that it is today,  a fabulous combination of Delicatessen, Mail Order, Cafe & Restaurant, Outside Catering, Wine Bar & Bistro and Cookery School in the Lakes. You will discover we have something special to offer everyone and look forward to welcoming you to share the experience..

Lucy's Specialist Grocers has moved lock, stock and barrel across Ambleside and is now open in all its glory at fab new premises in Compston Road.

  The blackboard outside Lucy's on a Plate of Ambleside traditionally offers a topical, typical thought provoking ‘thought for the day’,  to make you think, and make you smile!  Why not share Lucy's on a Plate's thought for the day with your friends.

When I first arrived in Ambleside (sometime in the last Century!) I was appalled to find a food desert. Where could I buy a selection of cheeses other than the ubiquitous orange cheddar, fresh pasta, home cooked pies, hams, delicious biscuits and so much more?   So whilst pining for the Delis in London and New York I really did not want to return to the smog, (aside from the fact that my husband is Cumbrian!!)

So the only solution was to do something about it.  I’m delighted to report that this is no longer the case and we really do know a thing or two North of Watford.

Lucy's on a Plate was born through a love of food and dedication to both the local and visitor population of Ambleside and its surrounding area.  In 1989 the shop Lucy's Specialist Grocers was opened,  this was originally a bit of everything, but now specialises much more in food that is locally produced, hard to obtain elsewhere, or simply made in our own kitchens (Janet’s scones are a must – and as for the Pecan Pie… the Gluten free Chocolate Almond Torte… well!)
