Welcome to the Marine Ecology Centre, Sidney, Canada. The Marine Ecology Centre was built in 1991 and opened in November of that year. It is operated by the Friends of the Marine Ecology Station, a non-profit society. The Centre receives support from the friends of MES, the local community, Town of Sidney, individuals and corporate sponsors. It operates educational programs year-round for school and college groups as well as for other organized groups and individuals.
The Marine Ecology Centre is a floating barge located adjacent to the shore, accessible by ramp. The lower deck includes laboratory/teaching space for 30+. Seawater is pumped continuously from a depth of about 5 meters. 12 wall aquaria portray typical local marine habitats. 30 table top centres include either open tanks or micro-aquaria under dissecting microscopes. Each includes representatives of a major animal or plant groups with a story board describing typical life styles.
