Still independent and run by a charitable trust, The Mayflower's surpluses have always been ploughed back into The Mayflower, Southampton, United Kingdom. Most significantly in summer 2003, the Theatre closed for five months for its first major refurbishment since 1987. The previously raked stage was made flat and the flying system moved to increase wing space, thus making it possible to accommodate Miss Saigon and future large-scale productions which otherwise would not fit. Other improvements included more wheelchair spaces and a lift for disabled people, more legroom in the stalls and a quicker, safer scene dock.
