One of the most imposing buildings in Valletta is the former "Sacra Imfermeria" of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, now popularly known as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, which is located adjacent to Fort St Elmo and overlooking the Grand Harbour.
The impressive and imposing Republic Hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre has been constructed in place of what once was the Main Courtyard of the ‘Sacra Infermeria’. Its large area, 728 square metres, is tastefully roofed over and has created Malta’s largest Auditorium in Valletta. With a seating capacity of 1,400, this elegant theatre style hall is the largest in the Conference Centre. It should not be amiss to be reminded that the Republic Hall, apart from its major role as a conference venue, can also hold large-stage productions. Apart from attracting local theatrical productions, the Republic Hall at the Mediterranean Conference Centre is frequently chosen for international productions.
