Welcome to Michipicoten Wado Kai located in the beautiful Northern Ontario town of Wawa, Canada. Classes are held twice weekly for youths and adults at Sir James Dunn Public School located on McKinley Ave, Wawa.
Classes commence in September of each year and run through to the end of May of the following year. Senior students meet for informal workouts through the summer months.
The Head Instructor for Michipicoten Wado Kai is Sensei Duane Wenmann 4th Dan.
Students are encouraged to do their best with their Karate regardless of their age or abilities. Nobody is expected to do anything beyond their own physical abilities as long as they take the art of Karate seriously and dedicate their time in class to improvement of skills. Students must show respect for other karateka (coloured belts) and yudansha (black belts). It is our opinion that adaptation, attitude, and respect are key elements in Wado Kai.
Michipicoten Wado Kai is a blend of Shotokan Karate and jujitsu. Emphasis in this style of Karate is Tai Sabaki (body shifting) and using redirective soft blocks (open and closed hand) to minimize the risk of injury. Students are trained to move from one form of stance into another form in a seamless manner. Wado stresses efficiency and all moves (blocks or strikes) maximize the use of energy. Focus is always on the "end point" of any move. Although time in between techniques is a state of relaxation, it is also a state of alertness. Although we have high regard to other forms of combat and Martial Arts, Wado students are discouraged from blending and combining other styles to create their own "flavour". Like other registered art forms, purety and the perfection of your chosen style is the ultimate goal for any serious martial artist.
