Welcome to Middle Bay Farm, Brunswick, Maine, United States. It was love at first sight when innkeeper Phyllis Truesdell was introduced to what has become Middle Bay Farm. The old farmhouse and barn, along with a sail loft cottage, had a magnificent view of the water and suggested a venerable history. The attraction increased with the smell of the sea air and the changing landscape accompanying the daily tides. Surprisingly, this tranquil coastal scene is tucked away on five and a half acres among fields and meadows only minutes from the activities of the college town of Brunswick, Maine. You are invited to share the simple glories of nature in this peaceful setting on Middle Bay Cove.
Middle Bay Farm Bed and Brekfast is open year round and offers four large bedrooms with private baths in the main house and two suites, each with full bath, living area, kitchenette and two small bedrooms, in the sail loft cottage.
Both the main house and adjacent cottage overlook the waters of Middle Bay and are located on the site of the Pennell Brothers Shipyard, which produced schooners, barks and brigantines until 1874. Remnants of ways from which these ships were launched still remain, mostly hidden by mud and seaweed.
The main house was built about 1834 by Benjamin Pennell, one of five Pennell Brothers. In 1897 it was sold to John Barnes who operated a summer boarding house called Bay View Farm in the early 1900's. Helen Keller is reported to have stayed here during that time. At the end of the 20th century the house lay empty for almost a decade until 1998 when it was bought with the dream of returning it to its former hospitality, by opening it as a Bed and Breakfast.
