Today our development projects at the National Institute for the Deaf, Worcester, South Africa, are geared towards the 21st century. The essence of our venture revolves around technological innovation and effective distribution of knowledge and skills to all Deaf people across all boundaries.
The outcry of Deaf people all over the world and for centuries is "We can do anything but hear, so treat us as normal beings". This outcry led to the establishment of the Institute for the Deaf in 1881 in Worcester, promoting the interests, human rights and well-being of Deaf people in South Africa.
It is a non-profit, private dynamic organisation and currently the only facility in South Africa and Africa with a full continuum of services to Deaf people from the cradle to old age.
Services: These services include early identification, assessment, provision of hearing aids and assistive devices, care, education and training, development and mental health services. - The Institute for the Deaf, a private dynamic non-profit organisation, established in 1881 in Worcester in South Africa is one of the oldest and largest constituency organinsations and resource centres safeguarding and promoting the interests, human rights and well-being of Deaf people in South Africa. - The Institute supports a holistic approach in education and training, health and spiritual care.
Lewensruimte the mini-village and protective workshops for Deaf adults with multiple disabilities, Deaf College South Africa (DCSA): post secondary vocational training for Deaf students, De la Bat School for Deaf preschool, care and education up to secondary level, two Deaf Churches in the Western Cape, employment programs.
