the Nederlandse KustverdedigingsMuseum... ...is established in the former pantserfort at Hoek van Holland. This fort was originally built near the New Waterway to defend the Rotterdam port against hostile war ships. With more than a hundred year old construction work, within its many rooms, passage ways and traps gives one good impression of how soldiers lived and defended from the fort. It now forms now the housing of the Nederlandse KustverdedigingsMuseum. The Museum is managed by the foundation ""Fort aan den Hoek van Holland"", a volunteer organisation.
A visit to the Museum is a travel back to the past. In a captivating manner we show you the soldiers rooms from 1890 with only one oil candle, - and the damp can still be smelt, where German soldiers steeled themselves against the grenades which the cannon of the fort fired on them. You stand eye to eye with the Dutch ministers from 1940 sailing on the afterdeck of a Dutch mine seeking ship from 1945 and see how thick the fort walls are at Nederlandse KustverdedigingsMuseum.
