Oakwood Resort Golf Course located in Grand Bend in Ontario, Canada recently celebrated its
84th anniversary. Designed and built by Fred Walker in 1922, it possesses a unique layout which never strays far from the resort complex. The beauty of the course is enhanced by mature coniferous and stately oaks, which on many holes play a part in narrowing the fairways and approaches to the greens.

Many of the tees and greens are elevated, starting with the first hole. With the watchful eyes of patrons enjoying a cool drink,
your first tee shot is called upon to land the green after carrying 140 yards over a ravine to set up this par 3. A great starter for those watching.

Oakwood Resort Golf Course located in Grand Bend in Ontario, is a challenging 5356 yards, and there is not one sand trap to contend with - which only adds credence to the natural
layout and individuality. However, there are enough trees and water to capture one's attention. The greens are the prime feature. The mixture of poa and bent grass has, over time, created a carpet-like cushion that entices you to discard your shoes and walk over them barefoot.

Although the putting line is generally true, the greens are understandably quite slow and a few rounds are helpful to find the putting touch. No doubt most would agree the thick carpet greens are much more attractive here than the need for speed. There are ample opportunities for the long ball. The course has 6 par 5?s,with the Big Daddy at 600 yards. Three others are around 500 yards or more and the other two are good birdie chances.

There are holes where the temptation can be too great not to go for it, such as the 10th back at the lively Pub & Grill where you once again tee off under watchful eyes. It?s a slight dog-leg 250 yard par 4 with the stream crossing some 180 yards out, and a large pond at the dog-leg corner. But the risk is water if the ball is not struck firmly.

The final hole is a par 3 which is right in front of the main Inn complex. The green is nestled in a bowl shaped enclosure and represents a nice ending to the round.

The builder must have designed this layout with the idea that the course be played foremost for the pure enjoyment of its natural setting. Little of nature seems to have been dislodged here. This is a fine resort Golf course and one that is sure to draw Golfers back to be played again!
