Ocklynge Manor is the only accommodation in Eastbourne UK in the to hold Visit Britain's Five Star Gold & The AA's top award "Highly Commended" . Situated in a quiet location, just over a mile from Eastbourne's sea front, Ocklynge Manor,is convenient for the Eastbourne Ladies International Tennis Tournament, theatres, the South Downs Way , Beachy Head and Glyndebourne. Ocklynge Manor sits within a ¾ acre walled garden and is just a short walk from Eastbourne UK’s town centre. The site was once a monastery and Commandery for the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. The current house was built about 300 years ago and is one of Eastbourne’s oldest houses. A dwelling has existed on the site for at least a 1000 years. The Peter Pan illustrator, Mabel Lucie Attwell , also lived here, hence the blue plaque on the road-side wall. Guests at Ocklynge Manor are able to enjoy a delicious breakfast with home-made bread and marmalade, as well as the luxury of Egyptian cotton linen.
The present garden still has an 18th century gazebo purported to be an original look-out tower for the London stage coach and a fine example of an 18th century grotto, although this is now dwarfed by a three hundred year old holm oak. Near to the gate, connecting Ocklynge Manor with Mill Road, is a deep well.
Eastbourne UK is 45-60 minutes train journey/drive from Gatwick Airport and a short boat journey to France from nearby Newhaven. There are local theatres, museums, sailing clubs, golf clubs and a great variety of National Trust houses to visit.
