Old Marsh Country Club, Bath Maine, USA, will be built in a beautiful area in Wells, Maine near the Webhannet River, only minutes from the ocean. In 1679, this same area was known as Batcomb Plantation and was owned by Nathaniel and John Cloyes. The Cloyes brothers were entrepreneurs who made their money overtly through agriculture... and on the side, running rum illegally from Boston to the Ogunquit settlement. After a brief run-in with the British Crown (for which one of the brothers spent a bit of time in jail), the Cloyes family and their descendants stayed for many years in the area which became known first as Moody and finally as Wells. Our shield is based on the Cloyes family colors of Blue and Gold. We have added green to symbolize Golf, and a diving osprey to represent the marsh. We think the rum-runners would approve.
