Peabodys serves hamburgers, espresso and amateur renditions of "Proud Mary" with equal flair is bound to thrive in a town like Palm Springs. In this bizarre oasis, cultural mash-ups are embraced as warmly as a biker parade crashing Gay Pride weekend. But Peabodys Cafe has also developed a devoted following because it's one of the few places on Palm Canyon Drive with a genuine, home-grown character - this one a little bohemian, in the style of a Parisian cafe, but with the decidedly American addition of a raucous karaoke party Thursday through Saturday.
When walking down Palm Canyon, if you don't stop, look or listen when you pass Peabodys Cafe, you might miss out on some of the best talent the desert has to offer. Some are too shy or too proud to tryout for Palm Springs Idol, but give them a mic on karaoke night and a star is born. Peaboday's Cafe, a place where you start out sober, and leave thinking, "I can sing" is just missing a few things in my book - a mechanical bull, and a floor covered with sawdust and peanut shells.
