Welcome to Rakiura Kayaks, Stewart Island, New Zealand. Rakiura Kayaks is Stewart Island's Sea Kayaking Specialist.
There are many sea Kayaking trips - Paterson Inlet has always played a big part in Island life, with a history in whaling, milling and fishing. The Inlet in now recognised for its natural features and is spending its retirement as an adventure playground.
Ulva lies across the mouth of Paterson Inlet, about 2 km from Rakiura Kayaks Thule Boatshed. At a mellow cruising speed it will take you about 40 minutes to paddle there.
Freshwater River - Mason Bay - A fantastic trip for those with time and Kayaking experience. In this trip you cross the island from East to West seeing the dramatic change from the (usually) placid Inlet to rugged but beautiful Mason Bay.
Bravo Island, Paterson Inet
At the mouth of Big Glory Bay lies Bravo Island, where our family has a small holiday cottage. Bravo is the perfect place to base yourself for a few days camping. There is some great coastline to explore allowing paddling in most wind conditions.
The cottage on Bravo was once the cookhouse at the Norwegian Whalers Base, and still retains it?s rustic charm.
The Foveaux Express catamaran runs a regular service from Bluff to the island, with morning and afternoon crossings. The trip takes about an hour, disembarking at the Halfmoon Bay wharf. Look out for Albatross and Sooty Shearwater while sailing, they are often seen from the deck, especially if there is a fishing boat near by.
It can be pretty exciting/daunting planning your big trip - so please feel free to phone or email Rakiura Kayaks, Stewart Island, New Zealand, if you need any further help in planning, always more than happy to help.
