Somerset County tourist attractions:
Somerset County is ideal for guests who wish to immerse themselves in Maryland's Historic Eastern Shore; it holds more Historic buildings and sites per capita than any other county in Maryland.
Somerset County was established in 1666 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, who named it in honor of his wife's sister, Lady Mary Somerset. Originally, Somerset County stretched from the bayside to the seaside and from the Virginia state line to the Nanticoke River, holding what are now the three lower Shore counties and a part of southern Delaware.
The Town of Princess Anne - The town of Princess Anne founded in 1733, was declared the new county seat of Somerset in 1744. Named after George II's daughter, Anne, this quaint Maryland town is listed in the National Register of Historic places, and boasts a long, proud history that is dearly cherished by its citizens. Carefully preserved Federal and Victorian houses line the graceful streets, underscoring the sense of pride and commitment found throughout the community of Princess Anne. Take a Walking Tour of Princess Anne.
