The South Tyrolean Wine Museum in Kaltern takes visitors on an exciting journey through the history of wine. Ancient tools and other items offer a general outline of wine growing in the past.
In fact, not only tourists, but also South Tyroleans who do not know about wine growing, discover an unknown world here, starting from dialect words such as "wimmen", "zummen", "Torggl" and "Saltner", which are used today as in the past, when the must was transported to the cellar by oxcart.
The South Tyrolean Wine Museum also features a cooper's workshop, equipped with original tools. It is sometimes possible to catch a glimpse of a disquieting figure with iridescent clothes: the Saltner. He was considered the protector of the vineyards and kept the grapes from being "picked" by unauthorised people.
The South Tyrolean Wine Museum is well worth a visit when touring Kaltern Italy.
