About the Inn...

The Spring Garden Inn  in Sandwich evolved from a home custom built in the 1940's for the Hannah sisters by their brother Edward. The Hannah's are descendants from the early pilgrims who settled this country in the 1600's. The family can trace its roots to the Plymouth colonists, family members saw military service under the British during the French and Indian Wars, were officers during the Revolutionary War under George Washington, and one ancestor even served as a staff aide to Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. Samuel Hannah moved to the Cape following a successful real estate and advertising career in the early part of this century. Today the Cape owes a debt of gratitude to Samuel who began yet a third career in historical research on land rights in his retirement. Aside from being an expert in real estate, Samuel was a strong advocate of protecting common lands for public use.



The structure now used as the Spring Garden Inn was originally a two-bedroom cedar shingled cape in a spectacular salt marsh setting. In the 1950's the sisters added four side rooms to the home to accommodate frequent guests and to earn a little money by renting to area visitors. By the 1960's new owners began operating the building as the Lighthouse Motel and eventually five more units were added to accommodate an expanding clientele. Over the years the building has been operated as the Scorton River Motel, the Seven Brothers, and the Spring Garden Motel. During the 1980's the then owners modernized the facility and decorated the rooms with cozy country Inn charm. Rooms in the old house were converted for guests and two efficiency units were added
