The St Helena Heritage Society - The Governor Hollamby officially opened the Museum on the 21 May 2002 during St Helenaâ??s Quincentenary celebrations. The building is situated near the base of Jacobâ??s Ladder and is managed by the St. Helena Heritage Society. Inside there is a ground floor and an upstairs gallery which holds items of great historical interest and have immense value. These connect St Helena to many parts of the world.
The ground floor features a variety of interesting items such as a carriage dating back to the 1950â??s, those from ships, various currencies and the military. The upper gallery is equally interesting hosting items relating to entertainment, education, industry, medicine and science, to name a few.
The upstairs gallery has a refreshment area and the ground floor has a souvenir shop attached, selling items related to St Helena such as postcards, t-shirts and shopping bags. The woodwork in the building was designed and built locally using imported timber.
The opening hours of the Museum are 10:00am to 4:00pm GMT on Thursdays and Fridays and 10:00am to 12 noon GMT on Saturdays. In addition, it is opened for school visits and during the visit of ships. Entrance to the Museum is free however a donation box is available.
Although the Museum has yet to have a curator, The St Helena Heritage Society, who can be contacted at the following address, maintains it.
