Hello and welcome to Stevens Cooperative School, Hoboken, United States. Stevens Cooperative School (Stevens), which will soon celebrate its 60th anniversary, is the only nonsectarian private elementary School in Hoboken. Originally an informal playgroup for children of the faculty at Stevens Institute of Technology, Stevens is now a progressive School with campuses in Hoboken and Jersey City educating more than 350 students from the 2s through 8th grade. While Stevens has seen many changes over the years, the School's commitment to both progressive education and parental involvement as key elements of the institution has remained constant.
Stevens is a true community of learners. The students are happy, motivated children who approach learning as a daily adventure safely within their grasp. Faculty and administration provide workshops and other opportunities for the discussion of ideas, values and behavior that mirror for parents and caregivers the experiences the children have in the classrooms. The School mission and accompanying goals, centered on the concepts of creative expression and community are clearly reflected in the teachers' daily practice, and through the leadership style of Head of School, Zoe L. Hauser. Both current and alumni families cite the School's sense of community, spirit of cooperation and emotional support, and enriching, integrated curriculum as key components to its success and their comfort level for enrolling their children year after year.
Stevens has realized significant growth since its humble beginnings as a Hoboken playgroup. The School now maintains four facilities: a 2’s program on Bloomfield Street, 3s,4s and PreK/K on River Street, 1st – 8th grade on Garden Street, all in Hoboken and 1st-4th grade at the Newport Campus in Jersey City. The 2s and 3s programs provide part-time morning and afternoon classes for those age groups. Full day programs at Stevens begins at 4 years old. Each year, Stevens graduates attend an impressive array of both public and independent high Schools in the New York metropolitan area.
Stevens Cooperative School is the oldest cooperative School in New Jersey, and an excellent model of progressive education in action.
